The men's and women's teams will both be in action in the National League final in Tullamore on Sunday after top performances in the qualifying rounds. The women's team were particularly impressive, picking up 7 wins in the second round in Athlone. The top scoring athlete in individual events was Amaris Borel, who won the 100mH and finished second in the 400mH.
Ara Freeman and Laura Kavanagh were the other highest scores, just one point behind Amaris' total. Ara continued her impressively consistent season by running close to her PB in the 100m, recording 12.36 into a -1.0 wind. She also tried her hand at the long jump, getting out to 4.15.
Another athlete to venture to a less familiar discipline was sprinter Ferdia Kenny, who picked up the javelin for this round. His 4th place finish in that event helped him become the top Sli Cualann score overall. Conor Dempsey was also a very strong team member, winning the 400mH as well as placing 6th in the high jump and triple jump.
Last year, Sli Cualann's women's team finished an agonizing fourth in the national final, less than a point from a place on the medal stand. On Sunday they will get another chance to make that podium.
