The Wicklow Race Series is a new initiative by Sli Cualann AC to help local runners achieve their fitness goals in a social environment and to provide financial support to local clubs.
The running series will consist of two leagues of four races, with the first league starting at the end of January. The races are separated by only two weeks, providing participants with a compact, focused plan to improve their fitness early in the season. The series will start in Rathdrum on January 28 with a run that will challenge participants over 5km. Two weeks later, round two will take place in Greystones with a 2 mile run. The series will move to Wicklow Town for the penultimate stage, where runners will take on the 3km distance at a course situated right by the sea. Roundwood is the venue for the series final on March 10. Participants will tackle a 2 mile course in one of the highest villages in Ireland before attending the awards ceremony, which will take place shortly after the race. Each run is hosted by the local club, all of whom are members of Sli Cualann. The registration fees (5 euro for Athletics Ireland members, 7 euro for non-members) will go towards supporting the local club. Therefore, the more athletes that participate at each race, the greater the financial support that will go to the local club. The 2016 Wicklow Race Series is a great way to build your fitness while contributing to the local community.
2015 was a very successful year for Sli Cualann Athletics Club, both on the national and international scene.
We want to keep progressing this year and the 2016 AGM on January 19 will be a vital step in making this happen. Members are invited to come to Shoreline Sports Park, Charlesland for 8:30pm to take part in the discussion on how Sli Cualann will plan to improve in 2016. Nominations are invited for all positions, but especially the vacant roles of Secretary, PRO and Child Officer. We look forward to seeing you on January 19. The category titles of the 2015 Sli Cualann Fit4Life Series were decided at the Wicklow Town 3km Road Race on December 17. The 11 race series, which consists of races in a variety of locations around County Wicklow, challenges participants to complete 6 races in order to be in the running for a category title.
The Closest Title Battle: The highly anticipated title battle in the men’s over 45 category didn’t disappoint, as contenders Michael Heatly and Mick O’Brien were only separated by three places in the overall results. The stage victory in this category went to Angus Tyner, with Mick and Michael taking the other top spots. That finishing order meant that the latter two ended up equal on points. Both athletes also had two wins to their name which means that the two tie for the M45 title. W45 Title Decided on Countback: The closest women’s category battle also came in the over 45 division. Martha O’Neill finished her season with a win on the Murrough to earn the overall title. Martha and Dora Hagan were inseparable on points, as both athletes finished on a score of 10. However, Martha had 4 stage wins to her name, giving her the overall win on countback. Perfect Scores: Five athletes won their category with a perfect score of six, meaning that they won a minimum of six of the eleven races: Rachel Wisdom (senior women), Aishling Kirwan (W40), Charlotte Stevens (W50), BB Kenny (W55) and Tom Cavanagh (M60). Most Races: Annmarie Kenny was the only athlete to complete all eleven stages in one category. The Parnell athlete had two stage wins in her series and finished 2nd overall in the W40 division. Jimmy Nolan also completed all eleven races. He started off as a first timer on stage 1 and then completed 10 stages in the M50 category. Titles: The other category titles went to: James Byrne (junior men), Lauren O’Byrne (junior women), Mick Finnan (M40), Ben Mooney (M50), Terry Kavanagh (M60), Tim Grummell (senior men) and Muriel Drinkwater (W60). Awards: The awards ceremony will be held on January 22 in Ashford. Final Standings | Champions The 11th and final round of the 2015 Fit4Life Series will take place on December 17 in Wicklow Town.
Registration Start: 19:00 Race Start: 19:30 This evening's (December 3) Fit4Life race in Wicklow Town has been postponed due to the inclement weather.
The 2015 Fit4Life Series, the Wicklow based running league for recreational athletes, will come to an exciting climax on Thursday (Dec. 3) at the final stage in Wicklow town. The Sli Cualann AC organised initiative consists of 11 races and participants must finish at least six to challenge for the overall awards. M45 The men’s over 45 division is set for a thrilling finale as Michael Heatly leads Mick O’Brien by just one point. Four athletes have achieved the six stage minimum, but the race for title will be fought out between these two. Michael started the series in the over 40 category before moving up to the over 45 group with good success. The three have raced against each other three times in this category, with Michael getting the better of Mick on two occasions. Senior Women In the senior women’s category, Rachel Wisdom continues in her efforts to catch current leader Claire O’Callaghan. Claire tops this category, having completed 8 races and winning four of these in the process. However, Rachel has won a very impressive 5 races, but has yet to reach the six race minimum. She can do this on Thursday. If Claire wins on Thursday and Rachel finishes second, they will tie on points and the number of stage wins! W45 In the women’s over 45 category, Dora Hagan leads the way with 9 race finishes, including 8 top three finishes. However, Martha O’Neill is breathing down her neck. Martha has achieved five race finishes, so she needs to record on more to challenge Dora for the title. If Martha wins on Thursday she would reach a points total of 10, one better than Dora’s current score of 11. However, if Dora wins she would score an even better overall score of 9. At the last two stages, Martha won and Dora finished second. If this happens again, they will draw on 10 points, but Martha would get the edge on race wins. M50 The contest for the men’s over 50 title is down to two athletes, Bill Porter and Ben Mooney. Ben has yet to achieve the six race minimum, but if he races on Thursday he could move into the lead. Ben and Bill have encountered each other three times this campaign, with Ben coming out on top each time. W55 The women’s over 55 league standings are led by Patricia Redmond. However, two athletes are just one race from achieving the six race minimum, Christine McCann and BB Kenny. BB has recorded five wins this season and if she competes on Thursday she should have this category title wrapped up. JM In the junior men’s division, two athletes are in contention for the category title: Ben Kinsella and James Byrne. Both athletes have recorded 5 race finishes and need to run in the league final if they are to take the win. Ben Kinsella has the upper hand and, if he races on Thursday, victory should be his. The final stage of the Fit4Life series takes place in Wicklow Town, with registration taking place by the Leitrim Lounge from 7pm. The race, which is hosted by Inbhear Dee, will start at 7:30. Jamie Cullen was Sli Cualann’s top male finisher at the Irish Cross Country Championships, the biggest national cross country event of the year. Jamie finished as the 11th best u23 athlete and placed 83rd overall in the senior men’s race, which was run over 10km in Santry Demesne in Dublin. Ann Marie Kenny was Sli Cualann’s only athlete in the senior women’s 8km. She placed 68th out of a field of the very best cross country runners in the nation. Sli Cualann were able to field a team in the men’s race. Tim Grummell was our second best scorer, in 98th. He was followed by Donal Flannery (116th, 15th u23), Alan Dalton (141st), Patrick Kinsella (152nd, 18th u23) and Ray Kenny (154th). The Sli Cualann team placed 18th overall and 5th in their category. It is worth mentioning that there are over 320 athletics clubs in the country. Sli Cualann also had two athletes competing in the junior women’s 4k. Sheila O’Byrne navigated her way around the demanding course to come home in 27th position. Also in action was Katy Conroy, who made it to the finish in 43rd place. Sli Cualann’s women put in a magnificent performance to win Intermediate gold at the Leinster Cross Country Championships in John F Kennedy Park today (November 8) while the men’s team were also on medal winning form, taking Intermediate silver for the second consecutive year. Navigating their way around a muddy course, the Sli Cualann women were locked in a fierce battle against Tullamore Harriers. The County Offaly club got their first two athletes across the line before Sli Cualann’s top runner, but the Sli Cualann athletes packed well. Only 4 places separated top scorer Aisling Kirwan (11th) and Annmarie Kenny, our final scorer. Sheila Byrne crossed the line in 12th position, while Claire O’Callaghan was the 14th athlete past the finishing post, earning the team an impressive 52 points, the exact same points tally as their blue and white clad rivals. However, Tullamore lacked the depth that Sli Cualann had. Annmarie’s 15th place finish was superior to Tullamore’s final scorer in 21st place, earning Sli Cualann the team gold. A fantastic achievement for the club, especially since Sli Cualann had no female athletes in this race last year. Paula O’Byrne was the 5th best Sli Cualann athlete in the race, taking 49th position. Last year, the men’s team won silver with Damien Lawless the top scorer in 5th. Damien spearheaded the Sli Cualann charge once again, improving one position from last year in finishing one place outside an individual medal. Tim Grummell was the next Sli Cualann athlete to make it to the finish, placing ninth. Donal Flannery came in 22nd with Martin Breen our final scorer in 35th to give Sli Cualann a total score of 70. Alan Dalton (40th), Patrick Kinsella (60th) and Tony Gartland (72nd) were other members of the strong men’s squad. Such a performance, earned the team their second consecutive silver medal in this very competitive championship race. A big thank you and congratulations to everyone who contributed to today’s success!
In less than ideal conditions at the Dublin City Marathon on Monday, Helen Barry ran a storming 2:58:28 to claim the top spot in her age category. She was also the first Sli Cualann athlete home and one of two to break three hours; the other being Joe Cawley who went 22 seconds under that barrier with a 2:59:38 clocking. Helen was the second Sli Cualann finisher at this race last year with a time of 3:02:30.
Next across the line was Dave Carraher who covered the wet and windy course in 3:18:22. Dominic Horan, who was on pacing duties, made his way over the finish line on Merrion Square North with 3:19:07 on the clock. There were 12920 finishers overall. Sli Cualann Results
